(Irving-AP) -- The Dallas Cowboys cut former Texas Longhorn cornerback Bryant Westbrook Friday.

The veteran corner had been demoted to part-time starter after last week's 19-to-10 loss to the expansion Houston Texans. Westbrook committed two costly penalties in that game and at one point was yanked off the field for consultations with coaches.

Friday, Cowboys officials said in an article on the team Web site that Westbrook had had a tough week of practice and had lost confidence.

Duane Hawthorne, who was supposed to rotate at left cornerback with Westbrook this week, will now start.
