BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (AP) _ Oklahoma State junior Hunter Mahan won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur championships.

Mahan downed John Merrick of Long Beach California 3-and-2 Thursday in the second round of match play.

In the third round he beat Bremmerton, Washington, native Connor Robbins one-up.

Mahan will take part in the quarterfinals Friday at the Oakland Hills Country Club. Play continues Saturday and ends with Sunday's 36-hole final.
