Tulsa International Airport broke ground Thursday morning on a new baggage screening building.

The building is just the first phase of a major renovation and expansion project at the airport. The bulk of the expansion will include six explosive detection systems that will screen passengers and their luggage. It is slated to be done by December 31st.

Because of added security, during the months of construction, crews will wear badges or be escorted to and from the site. Project managing director, Ron Coker, "It is a more cumbersome a process for construction, but certainly one that is necessary to meet all the security requirements of the airside and of the airline."

The expansion is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of 2003.
