Public defender lists 16 death row inmates affected by ruling

(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The Oklahoma Indigent Defense System says 16 state death row prisoners are retarded and can't be executed under last week's Supreme Court ruling.

Executive Director Jim Bednar says more names will be added to the list. Attorney General Drew Edmondson says his office is also looking at which capital cases will be affected.

Oklahoma County convictions on the list include Jimmy Dean Harris, Barney Marshall and Roderick Smith.

Three Creek County convictions are being challenged -- Calvin Johnson, Robert Lambert and Darrin Pickens.

Comanche County has two cases on the list -- Kenneth Charm and Maximo Salazar.

Others on the list are Lewis Gilbert, Richard Hammon, Mark D-Johnson, Gilberto Martinez, Patrick Murphy, Karl Myers, Richard Smith and Sammy VanWoudenberg.
