Tulsa County site working way off federal priority list

(Tulsa-AP) -- A Tulsa County landfill is closer to getting off the federal cleanup priority list.

A 30-day period for public comment about the Compass Industries Landfill Superfund Site has passed in silence. Dave Barry of the Environmental Protection Agency says that's usually a sign that a cleanup was successful.

Barry says the E-P-A hopes to have the landfill off the list by the end of this year.

The Compass Industries site was put on the superfund list 18 years ago. It covers about 35 acres and was once a limestone quarry. The landfill closed in 1976 and accepted industrial waste including jet fuel and pesticides.

Companies involved in the cleanup say it cost six-point-five (M) million dollars.
