(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahomans will get the chance to see a partial solar eclipse today.

The eclipse will be visible in the western United States, Canada and Mexico.

In Oklahoma, it will last from late afternoon until sunset. The moon will cover about 60 percent of the sun at the peak of the eclipse.

The solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun during daylight hours.

But be careful if you watch it. Scientists warn spectators to protect their eyes while looking at the eclipse to avoid damage.
