OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ An Edmond man died Thursday morning after he was shot in the head during an apparent road rage incident at a gas station, authorities said.

Derrell R. Deliere, 40, was shot late Wednesday night outside a gas station in western Oklahoma City, said Police Sgt. Charles Phillips. He died at an Oklahoma City hospital.

Deliere, a passenger, was shot after getting out of a vehicle to confront the driver of another car, authorities said.

Ariel Ortiz, 44, was driving erratically and following too closely on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike, authorities said. Ortiz and Deliere ``got into an altercation driving up the turnpike and it ended in Oklahoma City,'' Phillips said.

``It had been going on for some time. The altercation apparently started down the turnpike toward Lawton.''

Ortiz was arrested by officers after he returned to the gas station where the shooting occurred.

``They had a description of him and his car and he came back and parked across the street from the scene,'' Phillips said.

Ortiz was being held in the Oklahoma County Jail on a first-degree murder complaint Thursday.

The homicide is the 18th in the city in 2002.
