ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) _ Domingo Lopez, who taught his daughter, LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez, how to play golf, died Monday at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. He was 87.

Lopez, owner of a local auto body shop, began teaching his daughter how to swing a club when she was 8. He is credited with guiding her as she became one of the country's best junior players.

At age 18, she said she hoped to be able to earn the kind of money playing golf that would enable her to support her father.

``I kind of figure I owe him that, to make his life comfortable like he's made mine,'' she said at the time.

Nancy Lopez, who played college golf at the University of Tulsa, went on to win 48 titles in 25 years on tour and is considered the player who did more to popularize women's golf than any other.

Domingo Lopez was born March 20, 1915, in Valentine, Texas. His family remembered him as a ``great father, wonderful grandfather and loving great-grandfather.''

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

In addition to Nancy, he is survived by daughter Delma Guevara of Harbor City, Calif.; one sister, Vera Lopez of Carson City, Calif.; and four brothers, Lalo Lopez of Harbor City, Benito Lopez of Montebello, Calif., Manuel Lopez of Hemet, Calif., and Danny Lopez of Buena Park, Calif.
