OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ More than $19,000 is missing from a Mayes County Sheriff's Department fund, according to investigators.

Investigators said an employee has admitted to taking more than $5,400.

A special audit of the department also revealed about $10,500 is owed to a commissary vendor. The audit covered the period from January to December 2000.

Auditors found $19,211 missing from the fund, including a $583 bond from an inmate. It also revealed 46 checks written from the fund cost the department $920 in bank fees.

The district attorney has received a copy of the report and will determine what charges, if any, will be filed against the employee _ who wasn't named.

Harold Berry was sheriff during the time the money came up missing. Berry was defeated last August during the primary.

Sheriff Frank Cantey said he has instituted a system to guarantee that proper financial records are kept.
