(Lubbock, Texas-AP) -- The N-C-A-A is giving senior Texas Tech linebacker Jonathan Hawkins a sixth year of eligibility.

The 23-year-old Wichita Falls, Texas, native broke his left fibula in a 38-to-16 win against Utah State last September. He didn't play the rest of the season, making him eligible for sixth year of eligibility under NCAA medical hardship rules.

After the season, Tech applied for an extra year of eligibility for Hawkins and senior running back Rickey Hunter. But Hunter was denied a sixth year of eligibility by the N-C-A-A because he redshirted without injury in 1996. That same year, Hawkins was redshirted with shoulder problems.
