(Washington-AP) -- U-S Senator Jim Inhofe says changes in federal fuel tax laws is a major goal as he takes over as chairman of a Senate subcommittee on transportation.

Inhofe says reports that he wants to repeal the federal fuel tax are wrong. However, he says he'll explore the concept of allowing states to keep a significant portion of their federal gasoline taxes.

The federal fuel tax helps pay for roads and supports public transportation in the states.

Oklahoma has historically provided more federal tax money than it gets back for road projects.

The subcommittee Inhofe now chairs has jurisdiction over federal highway programs, civil works programs and water resources development.
