(Charleston-AP) -- Former West Virginia University defensive coordinator Steve Dunlap has been named to the Syracuse University football staff.

The Hurricane native was an assistant at W-V-U under coach Don Nehlen for 17 years, including 13 as defensive coordinator. He was not retained on the Mountaineer staff when Rich Rodriguez was named to replace Nehlen.

In 1996, Dunlap was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Award. The award is presented to the nation's top Division I-A assistant coach. That year, the W-V-U defense was ranked number one in the nation.

Dunlap was a three-year letter-winner at W-V-U, playing inside linebacker. He graduated from W-V-U in 1976.
