TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Traffic tickets were up and fatal accidents were down last year after a police department crackdown on traffic-law violators.

Police officers wrote 100,210 citations last year, 24,121 more than in 1999, and fatal accidents dropped from 51 to 39.

"The Tulsa Police Department has placed a greater emphasis on traffic enforcement in an effort to reduce collisions and fatal collisions," said police Sgt. Wayne Allen. "We would like to believe that the decrease in fatalities is a result of our efforts."

He said the police department started up a new traffic enforcement unit last year and purchased new radars for field officers.

The department also wants to buy cameras that would capture images of people who run red lights at certain intersections.
