(Memphis-AP) -- The University of Memphis would like to name a new football coach by the end of next week.

Athletic director R.C. Johnson met with the Tigers' players yesterday and told them he is moving as fast as possible on the choice.

He is not talking publicly about who the candidates are.

Published reports in Memphis say they include Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen...Auburn offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone...Memphis defensive coordinator Tommy West...Oklahoma assistant head coach Mark Mangino and Arkansas defensive coordinator John Thompson.

The new coach will replace Rip Scherer who was fired.
