The first numbers are in reflecting the new prices on Oklahoma car tags. The law took effect October 1, and it's saving some people money, but it has some people paying more.

For some it's an early Christmas present. A cheaper car tag in the state of Oklahoma where tags were once among the most expensive in the nation. That little sticker now costs no more than $85. However, not everyone who walks into a tag agency saves money. Some pay more in excise taxes even as they pay less for the new tag. “Since most people are just renewing their tags, they're really enjoying the $80 and $90 tags,” said Jim Barnes, Barnes Tag Agency. “I think that was what was bothering them. They don't mind paying a lot of excise taxes, because they know it's just one time."

The excise taxes increased the most on used cars. Even with the increase, most people end up saving money over time, because of the cheaper tags.

Oklahoma Tag Price
(average)

Nov 1999 $93
Nov 2000 $61

Savings $32

Oklahoma Excise Taxes
(average)

Nov 1999 $135
Nov 2000 $178

Cost $43

But compared to last year, excise taxes are up, costing the average car buyer $43 more. So far, most people save money when they renew tags, however they're paying more in excise taxes when they first buy the car.

The state question that lowered the price of car tags passed with a landslide vote. No recount was needed. Still some lawmakers say they want to take a second look at the law with the goal of cutting excise taxes to give every driver a break.
