--- (Kenwood-AP) -- The Delaware County Excise Board has canceled a Friday deadline that might have led to the quintupling of some residents' property taxes.

The board has been waiting for word from the attorney general's office on whether it can use certain federal funds to pay off $179,000 it owes former superintendent Garland Lane.

Lane won a lawsuit in which he claimed he was wrongly fired in 1994.

The Excise Board was to make a decision on whether a property tax raise would be needed to pay the bill.

It has rescheduled the meeting for November 22nd, 24th or 27th.

More than 70 residents have protested the looming levy at two Excise Board meetings.

They claim three government agencies own more than 82 percent of the district's land, and those agencies should be responsible for their share of the debt.
