The Tulsa Police Department's new traffic unit wrote nearly 4,000 tickets during its first 60 days in business. The goal of the 10-member squad is to reduce the number of car wrecks in east Tulsa by making people drive safely.

The officers say the worst times of the day for wrecks are morning and afternoon rush-hours, and the most common violations are speeding, and running red lights. They say these crimes affect nearly every citizen in the city. "More people are killed in traffic crashes than in shootings or other crimes people feel police ought to be doing," said traffic unit officer David Littlefield.

The traffic unit says the worst intersection for accidents is located at 41st Street and Memorial Drive. The unit hopes to cut down on accidents at the intersection in the coming months. They also plan to focus on drivers who try to make it through intersections on yellow lights.
