Cancer researcher named to head OU cancer center

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ A researcher known for developing therapies to treat non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and the chronic leukemias has been named director of the Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Howard Ozer also has been named director of the Hematology/Oncology section of the OU College of Medicine and will hold the Eason Chair in Oncology, officials said in a news released on Monday.

Ozer will oversee the development of OU's hematology/oncology program into a comprehensive cancer center that is expected to be on a par with such institutions as M.D. Anderson and Sloan-Kettering, officials said.

A native of Washington, D.C., Ozer earned an undergraduate degree in biology at Yale University. In 1975, he was among the first graduates of Yale's combined MD/PhD program in immunology.

Ozer has been associate director of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina.

He also was director of the Emory University Cancer Center and was director of the Cancer Center at the University of Hahnemann.
