(Tulsa-AP) -- Tulsa police say at least five elderly residents have recently been the target of an attempted scam.
The most recent was on Tuesday when a man says he received a telephone call telling him he had won 984-thousand dollars and a new car.
The man says he was told he would have to pay 44-hundred dollars in taxes, and that someone would come by to pick up a money order.
The man called police, who went the man's home.
While a detective was there the would-be scam artist telephoned again. The officer answered the phone and was told the caller works for "Contract Express" and gave a Canadian telephone number.
The caller hung up when the detective identified himself as a law enforcement officer.
Sergeant Tony Cellino says in each instance the victims had filled out a questionnaire they had received in the mail.
Detectives say such questionnaires can give scam artists personal information that's used to target victims.
