(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Some Oklahoma City civil rights leaders are opposing a proposal to rename a Deep Deuce street after baseball star Joe Carter.

Paul Thompson represents Oklahoma City's N-double-A-C-P and a coalition of groups working to preserve the old jazz district's history. Thompson says Stiles Avenue should be named after someone involved in the Deep Deuce area.

Deep Deuce is just north of Bricktown and was the business center of Oklahoma City's minority community.

Thompson says Carter deserves such an honor but it shouldn't be the renaming of a Deep Deuce street.

Carter is a graduate of Millwood High School and played in baseball's major leagues for 16 years.

The proposal will return to the city council October 17th for a final decision.
