Saying good-bye to my test copy of the Targus Screen-Scroller Optical Mini Mouse is hard. It's lightweight, can be used on almost any surface, feels comfortable and is ideal for laptop users.

The mouse relies on an optical sensor instead of the common track ball, so users aren't confined to a mouse pad. I used my sofa, the carpet, books and even my leg as platforms instead of a mouse pad, all with precise results. Shiny surfaces, such as high-gloss paper, don't work as well. The Screen-Scroller Optical Mini Mouse is dwarfed in length, width and depth by typically sized mice. Its scrolling wheel allows quick movement up and down documents or Web pages on your computer screen, a convenience that reduces wrist movement.

The $49.99 mouse and its software are compatible with Windows 95/98/2000 and NT computers with USB and PS/2 connections.

Also new from Targus is a line of $29.99 to $69.99 cases for personal digital assistants. As with many competitors, the sizes vary, with some allowing storage for credit cards, notes and a checkbook.
