(Detroit-AP) -- A source says Bridgestone/Firestone plans to announce a recall of about 20 million tires for light trucks and sport utility vehicles.
The tires have been implicated in more than 40 fatal accidents.
Most of the Firestone A-T-X, A-T-X Two and Wilderness tires are on Ford Explorers, the industry's top-selling S-U-V. But the source says the recall, expected to be announced tomorrow in Washington, will include tires on all brands of vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 270 complaints, including reports of 46 deaths and 80 injuries, about failing Firestone truck tires.
The complaints charge that Firestone tires peel off their casings, sometimes while the light trucks or S-U-V's are traveling at high speeds.
Discount Tire, Montgomery Ward and Sears Roebuck have stopped selling the tires because of safety concerns.
