(St. Louis-AP) -- Shannon Miller is reminding the gymnastics world of how tough a competitor she is. She scored a 9.650 on the uneven bars last night and made a strong initial bid to earn a spot on her third Olympic team. That despite the hairline crack in her leg suffered at the U-S Classic in Tulsa earlier this month. Miller's status for nationals has been in question since she suffered the injury.

Miller scratched for the balance beam, floor and vault competitions. But her score on the uneven bars was good enough for a three-way tie for second. It's expected that she will drop out of the meet for the second round tomorrow since she has no chance to finish in the Top 12. Her coach, Steve Nunno, has filed a petition to admit her to the Olympic trials.
