CATOOSA, Okla. (AP) -- A shipping record was set in the firs thalf of the year at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, the port authority announced. Lester L. Moore, vice president of the City of Tulsa-Rogers County Port Authority, said 707 barges carrying 1.18 million tons of cargo passed over the port's docks in the first six months of 2000. That compared to 1.15 million tons on 680 barges during the first half of 1999.

Moore attributed the increase to a growing economy, cooperative weather and good river flows on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. In June, 148,000 tons of cargo on 87 barges passed through the port compared to 134,000 tons in 85 barges in June 1999. Commodities transported on the system include outbound shipments of fertilizer, wheat and other grains. The port also handles steel pipe and manufactured equipment.
