(Norman-AP) -- A former Midwest City athletic standout who played minor league baseball for four years has missed the last two weeks of summer workouts with the University of Oklahoma football team.

That's raising questions about Vernon Maxwell's future with the Sooner gridiron program. Summer workouts are voluntary. And coaches won't know Maxwell's intentions until the Sooners report next month for the beginning of fall practice.

Coach Bob Stoops says there is reason to doubt that Maxwell's plans for the future include O-U. Stoops says Maxwell hasn't done very well with his summer work and he's been inconsistent.

Meanwhile, another player has left the team. Reserve running back Dwight McKissic says he will transfer to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
