(New York-AP) -- A-T-and-T has announced new long-distance rates for its basic plans.
The company is scrapping a three dollar monthly minimum charge, but is raising most per-minute rates by 13 to 40 percent, depending on when the call is made.
The new proposal follows criticism of a previous rate plan.
Last month, the Federal Communications Commission reduced the access fees local phone companies charge long distance carriers for use of their lines. A-T-and-T promised to pass the savings along to consumers.
But it drew consumer complaints for a proposal that would have raised some rates by as much as two and a-half times.
The new rates are to take effect July first.
