(Tahleqauh-AP) -- The new director of the Cherokee Nation marshal service says he's aware of the fence mending that needs to be done within the tribe.

David E- Roberts says that can be accomplished through professionalism and training. He says he wants tribal members to
have confidence in Cherokee Nation marshals.

The 30-year law enforcement veteran was sworn in today as director.

He's served with the Tulsa Police Department, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

In 1997, the Bureau of Indian Affairs assumed law enforcement duties after a tribal dispute resulted in then-Chief Joe Byrd firing the tribe's eight-member marshal service.
