The News on Six has confirmed that current Appalachian State head basketball coach Buzz Peterson will be named head coach of the University of Tulsa basketball team.

Sources close to the selection process tell KOTV Sports reporter Ryan Rahal that Peterson and school officials negotiated a contract Monday afternoon.

Details of the contract agreement between the school and Peterson are unavailable.

A press conference to introduce Peterson as the new coach is expected Tuesday afternoon.

Peterson has led Appalachian State for the past four seasons, compiling a 79-39 record, while leading the Mountaineers to this year’s NCAA basketball tournament.

The University of North Carolina graduate may have won the job with an “impressive” interview Saturday.

He used the performance to edge out fellow candidates Texas-San Antonio Head Coach Tim Carter and current University of Tulsa assistant coach Norm Roberts.
