(Austin-AP) -- Confederate heritage groups have been keeping a daily vigil outside the Texas Supreme Court building in Austin.

They're protesting the removal of two plaques with Confederate symbols from the building. And they vow to keep it up at least several days a week until the November presidential election.

Governor George W. Bush's office developed the plan to remove the plaques after the N-A-A-C-P called for their removal earlier this year.

The protesters are angry that Bush and state officials ignored their demands for a public hearing before removing the plaques.

The old plaques carried a quote from Confederate General Robert E. Lee and bore images of the Confederate battle flag and the seal of the Confederacy. They were replaced June 9th with new ones that say equal justice is available to all Texans "regardless of race, creed or color."
