TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) -- A former day-care owner has pleaded noc ontest to a charge that she broke the fingers of a boy in her care.

Carla Faye Dick, 42, entered the blind plea Monday in CherokeeC ounty District Court. She will be sentenced Aug. 3.

The blind plea came as Dick's trial on an injury to minor child count was to begin. It also means she made her plea without first reaching an agreement with prosecutors.

Dick could be sentenced up to life in prison on the child injury count.

Dick was charged in October 1998. Prosecutors said they believed she broke the 3-year-old boy's fingers while bending them back in a disciplinary action she had taken several times before, according to reports.

The child had fingers broken on both hands.

Dick lost her state Department of Human Services license after a state board investigation.
