(Nashville, Tennessee-AP) -- The U-S Supreme Court has denied two applications for a stay of execution by condemned child killer Robert Glen Coe.

The high court's action sets the stage for Tennessee's first execution in 40 years.

Coe is scheduled to die by injection at one a-m Central Daylight Time for the 1979 rape and murder of eight-year-old Cary Ann Medlin.

Coe contends he is insane. He says executing him would violate U-S Supreme Court standards against executing inmates who do not understand their penalty or why they are receiving it.

After the Supreme Court denied his request, Coe asked a Nashville judge to halt the execution. He argues it is illegal for licensed medical professionals to kill anyone in Tennessee.
