(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Superintendents are in short supply for about a dozen urban school districts. Among those districts are Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
Tulsa's superintendent John Thompson recently accepted the same position with the Pittsburgh. And Oklahoma City's Marvin Crawford is nearing retirement. Around the country, cities shopping for superintendents include New York, Los Angeles, Detroit and San Francisco.
A study by the American Association of School Administrators found only 18 percent of 17-hundred superintendent surveyed say they'd take a position in a large, urban district. And most stay about three years.
Katrina Kelley of the National School Boards Association says urban superintendent jobs are a pressure cooker. Kelley says the job is a hot seat because of rapid changes in the education process.
