(Washington-AP) -- A national sampling of motels and hotels shows about eight of every ten cribs inspected are unsafe.
The spot checks were conducted by the U-S Consumer Product Safety Commission at 90 hotels in 27 states and the District of Columbia.
Among the safety hazards discovered were loose hardware, unsecured mattress supports, dangerously soft bedding, and oversized sheets.
The commission says all of those conditions could cause strangulation or suffocation.
Commission head Ann Brown has called on the nation's hotels to take steps to assure the safety of their youngest guests.
Brown says so far only one hotel group, Bass Hotels and Resorts, has agreed to participate. Bass operates Holiday Inn, Inter-Continental and Crowne Plaza Hotels.
