TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A school bus driver has been suspended with pay after a 4-year-old girl fell asleep on the way to school was left on the bus for four hours, school officials said.
The Tulsa Public Schools bus driver failed to follow school policy to check the bus seats and aisle after the route and then have another driver double-check the bus, said Transportation Director Bob Haddox.
The girl was on her way to the Bunche Early Childhood Center when she fell asleep Friday. She remained asleep on the bus until the driver found her later that afternoon, Haddox said.
"There is no excuse for it, and I'm not going to give one," Haddox said. "It is rare. In the 21 years I've been here, that's happened about five times."
