(Kingman, Arizona-AP) -- An Edmond-based private prison company is expanding to Arizona.
Dominion Correctional Properties of Edmond has purchased about 160 acres along Interstate 40 for a potential medium-security prison.
Dominion builds prisons and leases them to other companies that specialize in the operation of private prisons. The company owns prisons in McCloud, Oklahoma, Olney Springs, Colorado and Stanley, Wisconsin.
Jim Hunter is Dominion's executive vice president. Hunter says construction could begin as early as October and the private prison could open in the spring of 2001.
Hunter says Dominion still needs to meet the requirements of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and to secure financing before work can begin.
