UNION CITY, Okla. (AP) _ The largest brick company in the US is planning to build a plant in Union City and hire about 50 workers.

Georgia-based Boral Bricks says it will build the plant on the site of a brick factory it closed in 1990. The plant is to open early next year and produce about 80-million ``king size'' bricks a year.

Company officials say the new plant will help solve a shortage of bricks that's due to a regional boom in housing.

Boral President Bob Kepford says the demand for bricks for housing is at a peak and is expected to stay strong.

Boral Bricks operates a brick plant in Muskogee with 45 employees and has sales offices and showrooms in Oklahoma City and Broken Arrow.

Union City is in southern Canadian County, just west of Mustang.
