The judging is finished in our Battle of the Bands contest. 31 different schools from across Green Country sent in videos of their high school bands, all in the hopes of winning big bucks.
News on 6 anchor Craig Day went to Eufaula in McIntosh County to award our first $1,000 check. At the Eufaula pep rally, students had plenty to cheer about as they get ready for a playoff game.
The News on 6 gave them 1,000 more reasons. Jessica Dawson, Drum Major: "I'm very excited. We really didn't know anything about it, so we're very excited."
The Eufaula band is the first winner of the News on 6's Battle of the Bands contest.
Brittany McGuire, Drum Major: "It was just the icing on top of the cake. It was great. Especially for a senior year. After 8 years of hard work it really pays off for everyone to know, especially the school and the students to know we have a great program."
The News on 6 and Mathis Brothers will award $1,000 checks to six schools. Eufaula won out of class 3A.
Glenn Sizemore, Eufaula Band Director: "It's great. We really need the money. What we really need is a new tuba. So we're going to take this money and put it toward the purchase of a new tuba."
Eufaula almost didn't get their entry in on time. They finished their tape on the last day we were accepting entries. It was driven from Eufaula up to Tulsa and made it with about 30 minutes to spare before the deadline. That dash to Tulsa was worth it.
Our judges are made up of former high school and college band members and drill team members.
We will announce the other five winners next week. Watch the News on 6 each day next week to find out if your favorite band wins a grand.
