NEPTUNE, N.J. (AP) _ A passenger in a sport utility vehicle driven by former New Orleans Hornets and current Denver Nuggets guard JR Smith has died after the SUV crashed Saturday in New Jersey.

Authorities say Andre Bell died of head injuries Monday.

Smith was hospitalized with an injured shoulder and numerous scratches.

Meanwhile officials in New Jersey say Smith had his driver's license suspended five times in less than a year but was in good standing at the time of the accident.

Investigators say both Smith and Bell were thrown from the SUV when Smith ran a stop sign and collided with another car.

Smith was with the Hornets for their first season in Oklahoma City where the team played for two years following Hurricane Katrina.
