Two OSU netters, Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Ivan Puchkarov, have advanced in the NCAA Singles Championship in Athens, Georgia. Both won their opening-round matches on Wednesday and will advance to the round of 32.
Nedovyesov beat UNC Charlotte standout Roy Sichel in the opening round. Sichel took the first set from the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Year, 6-3. Nedovyesov dominated the second set, 6-1, before closing out Sichel 6-4, in the third.
Nedovyesov, who is ranked No. 23, has now won 15 of his last 17 matches. He’ll face second ranked Somdev Devvarman of Virginia on Thursday. If Nedovyesov defeats Devvarman he’ll be the first Cowboy netter ever to earn All-American honors his freshman season.
Oklahoma State’s Ivan Puchkarov is also advancing to the second round. On Wednesday afternoon Puchkarov, ranked No. 30, faced Southern Cal’s Jamil Al-Agba. He defeated the Trojan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The junior All-Big 12 performer is now 28-8 on the season.
Puchkarov faces Daniel Vallverdu in the second round.
