McCain Campaigns In Oklahoma

Presidential hopeful John McCain was in Tulsa Monday morning to raise money. The republican senator met with supporters before making an appearance in Oklahoma City at the legislature. There are so many candidates right now, they are fighting for campaign money and trying to get some attention. The News On 6â€™s Emory Bryan reports that's why Oklahoma has been getting visits from candidates over the last couple of months.

McCain is just the latest of the candidates to swing through Oklahoma. They're all looking for campaign cash right now and not as concerned about the votes, just yet.

â€œWe're doing fine. We're ahead in the early states,â€ said McCain. â€œThere are ups and downs in a campaign, but I'm very happy with where we are politically and financially with a lot of work to do.â€

The latest Oklahoma Poll shows McCain running second with 23% of the straw vote and Rudy Guiliani as the early favorite with almost a third of Republicans saying they would vote for him. Guiliani has been to Oklahoma too, visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial to talk about terrorism. Republican Candidate Mitt Romney will be in Tulsa Wednesday for a fundraiser and now is polling at 6% of the support statewide.

The democrats have been active in Oklahoma too. Last month, Senator Barack Obama came to Tulsa to raise money, but he's got some ground to cover on getting political support.

Among Oklahoma Democrats John Edwards and Hillary Clinton are tied with 29%. Obama gets 14%, but there's an even larger undecided block at 18%. McCain's Tulsa trip was for a $500 a plate fundraiser, where he talked about his energy policy.

"It would mean exploitation of domestic oil and natural gas reserves which is a big issue in the state of Oklahoma,â€ McCain said. â€œIt would mean nuclear power and alternate energy and all forms of ethanol."

Even though he's third in the poll for potential voters, McCain does have popular support with almost half of all voters saying they have a favorable opinion of him. The Oklahoma Poll is a partnership between The News On 6 and the Tulsa World.
