GLENCOE, Okla. (AP) -- A Kansas man who received the heart of a 14-year-old Glencoe boy is establishing a scholarship for a graduating senior at Glencoe High School. Steve Lewis of Haven, Kansas, presented the first $500 scholarship Thursday in memory of Roger "Bubba" Porter Jr.
Porter died with his 6-year-old brother and his stepfather in an auto accident six years ago. Just weeks before the crash he told his mother he wanted to become an organ donor.
His heart went to Lewis who had been on a transplant list for two years and was being kept alive with the help of a mechanical heart.
The first scholarship was awarded to Drew Hays who plans to attend Oklahoma State and go to pharmacy school.
