BURR RIDGE, Ill. (AP) -- A collection of rare baseball cards that includes a mint-condition rookie card of Oklahoma native Mickey Mantle has sold for a total of $1.6 million.
The cards belonged to 89-year-old Lionel Carter of Evanston, Illinois, who says he began his collection as a 15-year-old in 1932.
The Mantle card alone sold for $165,000.
Carter says he didn't want to let the cards go but decided to sell out of concern for his safety. Thieves had broken into his home last October and stole several cards although most were recovered by police.
