Friday’s severe weather causes big problems on Oklahoma roads. From lightning strikes to hail to wind damage, it's been a busy night. News On 6 anchor Craig Day reports the rains been heavy at times in some parts of Green Country making driving difficult, unfortunately some folks found that out the hard way.
Friday the 13th will be a memorable day for many Green Country drivers.
"We were both waiting to turn and she just rammed into us," Ohio resident Sylvia Morris said.
About 6:30 p.m. Friday a pick up slammed into the back of a car, which then hit another car near Admiral and Garnett. No one was seriously hurt, but there is a lot of damage.
And of course, that wasn’t the only accident on Green Country roads. Slick and hazardous driving conditions and poor visibility have caused problems for many other drivers as well.
A driver on Interstate-244 lost control of his pickup causing it to overturn. And on the Creek Turnpike an SUV rolled over, luckily no one was hurt in either accident.
A big rig also found traveling tough going, a semi jackknifed on the Broken Arrow Expressway shutting down the highway temporarily and backing up traffic.
"Slowing down would probably be the best thing. Just slow down if you're out driving in the rain," said Captain Phillip Lee with the Tulsa Fire Department.
That's the advice Mike Halley wants drivers to take so that no one else has a Friday the 13th like he has.
"This increases your stopping distance something awful. There's no traction, she hit the brakes, but there was no slowing down," he said.
The biggest problem in most cases is that people just drive too fast for the conditions. Tulsa police are on operation slick streets right now, so they only respond to injury accidents. Basically, you exchange information and fill out your own report and mail it in.
