Because of crime, north Tulsa sometimes carries a negative connotation with it, but Tuesday, the News On 6 talked to one north Tulsan who's trying to change the way people see her community. News On 6 anchor Jennifer Loren reports she's highlighting the positive parts of north Tulsa, one magazine at a time.
Roberta Clardy grew up in north Tulsa. Her parents were very proud of where they were from and taught her the values of growing up in the north Tulsa community.
"My dad was really quiet, probably talked to me about nothing else except for north Tulsa my whole life," said Clardy.
After several years away from Tulsa, Clardy says she came home to Gilcrease Museum, Mohawk Park and a long list of reasons why north Tulsa really is a good place. So she started a magazine about it, North Tulsa Magazine.
"North Tulsa is an incredible place, and I guess I just want people to know it, you know," Clardy said.
This is her chance to bring people's focus to the rich history and the great things north Tulsa has to offer. Clardy works with a small team of employees who work from their homes, like Shayna Marcacci, the magazine's art director. Marcacci says working on this is the favorite part of her day, something she's very proud of. She hopes to see the magazine grow.
"We're still small. So it’s a struggle,†said Marcacci. “It’s hard to get advertisement, but each month gets better and better."
Clardy would also like to see it grow but mostly wants North Tulsa Magazine's message to be heard.
"A big part of it is that we hope that north Tulsa sees how beautiful we are, that north Tulsa sees how beautiful it is," said Clardy.
This months issue is just the third one published. It’s available at locations all over Tulsa including Coopers Market, OSU-Tulsa, Borders and Wild Oats.
