OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- An Oklahoma City man and his son receive prison sentences in connection with the death of the man's 15-year-old daughter in 2004.
Forty-eight-year-old Robert Dewayne Hayes Junior received a life sentence Thursday in Oklahoma County District Court. His son, 20-year-old Robert Dewayne Hayes the Third, was not punished on a murder charge because of a technicality but received a 25-year sentence for shooting at police.
A jury convicted the two men last week, finding that they were responsible for the death of Hillary Hayes in February 2004 because she was killed as a result of their actions.
Family members continue to insist that police officer Shawn Byrne is to blame for Hayes' death.
The incident began when Byrne pulled over a car with the two men and the girl inside. Someone in the car shot at the officer, leading to a chase. The three eventually fled on foot, with Hayes Junior and his daughter going in one direction.
Byrne followed the pair and shot them because he says he thought they were armed.
