NEW YORK (AP) -- A new survey rates Oklahoma high in its regulation and oversight of child care centers.

The National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies says Oklahoma rates sixth best behind the US military, Illinois, New York, Maryland and Washington.

The rankings are based in part on caseloads for center inspectors, frequency of inspections, health and safety requirements, background checks, staff qualifications and activities offered to children.

Idaho ranks last on the list followed by Louisiana, Nebraska, Kentucky, California and Kansas.

The report is called "We Can Do Better" says many states are distressingly lax in their regulation and oversight of child care facilities.
