OLNEY, England (AP) _ Jane Hughes has won the English leg of the annual trans-Atlantic pancake race on Shrove Tuesday.

The 42-year-old Hughes reached the finish line of the 415-yard course in one minute, 13.5 seconds. Women in Liberal, Kansas, hoped to beat the time at their race that begins at 11:50 Tuesday morning.

The Shrove Tuesday pancake race is a tradition between the women of Olney, 50 miles northwest of London, and their counterparts in the southwest Kansas town.

According to legend, the Pancake Race began in 1455 when a rushed Olney housewife ran to Shrove Tuesday church services still carrying a pancake in a frying pan.
