EDMOND, Okla. (AP) Quarterback Brady Wardlaw throws for one touchdown and runs for another to help lead Okeene to a 24-14 victory over Velma-Alma for the Class A state championship.
Wardlaw finished with 125 yards passing and another 23 yards rushing, but his touchdown on the ground proved to be a turning point in the game late Saturday.
With the game tied at 14, Okeene was forced to punt with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. Velma-Alma's Lee Cain mishandled the ball and Drew Westfahl recovered it for the Whippets.
Okeene then drove to the end zone in four plays, capped by Wardlaw's run from three yards out for the score.
Velma-Alma scored first on a three-yard run from Trenten Files. After a five-yard touchdown pass from Wardlaw to Taylor Hooper, the game was tied 7-7 at the half.
Comets quarterback Kyle Palacol finished with just 18 yards rushing and 61 passing yards.
