Firefighters in Bixby will soon have a new "home away from home". The city of Bixby broke ground Tuesday on its new fire station at 121st and Memorial.

It will house up to eight firefighters and will look similar to homes in the neighborhood. The station is part of a $20-million bond package voters approved back in April.

Bixby Fire Chief Steve Abel: “this is a big step especially for our city and our fire department. It's probably the biggest thing we've ever done outside of buying new fire trucks. But I think this will take us well into the future and provide a higher level of safety for our citizens.”

The new station should be ready to open house in about 10 months.
