TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) _ Northeastern State University officials say they have notified the NCAA that the school will stop using its Redmen nickname.
University President Larry Williams informed NCAA Executive Vice President Bernard Franklin by telephone that the school would abandon the name. A university spokesman says a written notification is being made in the form of a report.
The NCAA can bar schools with hostile or abusive team names from hosting or participating in the organization's championship events and set yesterday as the deadline for the school to notify it of its intention to change the name.
A school task force is examining 400 suggestions for a new nickname.
Finalists for the new nickname will be announced on October 5th.
